Famous Blues Bass Lines

Blues music is a sturdy, adaptable music that reflects many shades of emotions and lends itself to numerous stylistic interpretations. This 5 ½" by 8" QWIKGUIDE is designed to help the bassist become more versatile. Each blues bass pattern in this book is played over four bars of C7. By practicing all 50 licks over the same chord progression, students can learn the basic concept of improvisation: how to play a variety of musical phrases over the same chord or chord changes. Each example is written in both notation and tablature exactly as it is recorded. The accompanying CD, featuring Larry McCabe's Heat-Seeking Missile Blues Band is recorded in stereo with drums and rhythm guitar in the center, bass guitar on the left, and lead guitar on the right. The licks are recorded at a moderate tempo for ease of learning.

Red Mitchell - Cello

Frank Strazzeri - Piano
Jimmy Bond - Bass
Frank Butler - Drums
REVIEW:
Brilliant work from one of the most important forces on the LA scene of the 50s – and one of the few early albums Red Mitchell cut under his own name! The album’s a live set that has Red playing jazz cello – mostly plucking the instrument like a bass, with the great Jimmy Bond handling the real bass work on the set in the rhythm section! Given Bond’s usual ability to make a session groove, the sound here is plenty darn nice throughout – a romping, vamping sort of style that’s got a much deeper feel than you might expect from an album of jazz cello. The rest of the group includes Frank Strazzeri on piano, Frank Butler on drums, and Jim Hall on guitar – the last of whom matches notes nicely with Mitchell, almost in a grittier take on west coast jazz counterpoint. Titles include “Jim’s Blues”, “Rejoice”, “Black Eyed Peas”, and “Night In Tunisia”. (Black & silver label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear.)

Ron Carter Bass Hank Jones Piano Grady Tate Drums
REVIEW:
Hank Jones’ relaxed, understated keyboard demeanor leaves lots of room for interplay with bassist Ron Carter and drummer Grady Tate. This is a nicely balanced session including the latin flavored title-track, Jones’ interpretation of two contemporary ballads penned by Sara Cassey, “Warm Blue Stream” and “Wind Flower” plus Harold Arlen’s 1934 standard “As Long As I Live.” The date’s highlight is Jones’ splendid rendition of the Richard Rodgers waltz “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning.” The familiar melody is exquisitely reharmonized and a rhythmic interlude is inserted between sections. (A solo piano version of this arrangement was recorded in 1977 and is included in the Smithsonian Jazz Piano collection.) Claus Ogerman’s “Favors” is a Jones favorite, appearing on two subsequent live releases by the pianist. “Minor Contemplation,” a hard-driving bop line, is the only Jones original. All in all, an excellent offering from an undisputed master.

Allmusic.com:
Other than a set in 1957, this long-out-of-print LP was guitarist Jim Hall's debut as a leader. The 29-year-old Hall was not exactly an unknown name at the time, having played with the Original Chico Hamilton Quintet and the Jimmy Giuffre Three; he was still a year away from joining Sonny Rollins. Subtitled "The Modest Jazz Trio," the band on this date consists of Hall, bassist Red Kelly, and Red Mitchell quite effectively playing piano (he was usually a bassist). The combination works quite well, performing what was essentially straight-ahead jazz. Originally, the unit was only supposed to record the "Good Friday Blues" for a blues anthology album, but the music felt so strong that the trio cut a full album in one day, performing three standards, two Mitchell originals and Bill Harris' "Bill Not Phil." Well worth searching for; hopefully Blue Note will get around to reissuing this underrated gem someday.

In 1976 Barre Phillips began recording as a solo artist for ECM Records with Mountainscapes. After admiring the incredibly high recording standard (a constant aspect of ECM recordings), the uniqueness - strangeness, in fact - of the music was just striking.
The song titles indicate that this is actually a suite - each track is essentially another interpretation of the central theme that Phillips & Co had in mind. Whether the bass was bowed or plucked, the track rhythmic or contemplative, images of storms, sunrise, sunset, loss and wandering all came to mind. When the final track is kicking off with a chugging, repeated bass riff and the drums find the rhythym, the great surprise is the appearance of John Abercrombie playing in a style I've not heard since from him - fast, precise, so effective.
It is expensive, obscure, hard to find...but give it a try and be amazed!

Bill Crow - From Birdland to Broadway: Scenes from a Jazz Life
Bill Crow - From Birdland to Broadway: Scenes from a Jazz Life
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | 1993-09-09 | ISBN: 0195085507 | PDF | 288 pages | 14.51 MB
In the 1950s, New York City's Birdland was the center of the world of modern jazz--and a revelation to Bill Crow, a wet-behind-the-ears twenty-two-year-old from Washington State. Located on Broadway between 52nd and 53rd streets, the club named for the incomparable Charlie "Bird" Parker boasted lifesize photo murals of modern jazzmen like Dizzy Gillespie, Lennie Tristano, and, of course, Bird himself, looming large against jet black walls. Exotic live birds perched in cages behind the bar. The midget master of ceremonies, 3'9" Pee Wee Marquette, dressed in a zoot suit and loud tie, smoked huge cigars and screeched mispronounced introductions into the microphone. And the jazz-struck young Crow would park in the bleachers till 4 am, blissfully enveloped by the heady music of Bird, Bud Powell, Max Roach, and a host of other jazz giants.
From Birdland to Broadway is an enthralling insider's account of four decades of a life in jazz. Bill Crow, journeyman bass player, superb storyteller, and author of the successful Jazz Anecdotes, here narrates many moving and delightful tales of the pioneers of modern jazz he played with and was befriended by. We find Dizzy Gillespie, with whom Crow, because of prior commitments, regretfully declined steady work, dancing at the Royal Roost, Stan Getz sadly teetering on the brink of losing himself to drugs, and Harry Belafonte (known then as "the Cinderella Gentleman") running a lunch counter in New York's Sheridan Square between music dates. And we also witness many of the highlights of Crow's career, such as in 1955 when the Marian McPartland Trio (with Crow on bass) was named "Small Group of the Year" by Metronome; Crow playing with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet at venues like Storyville in Boston and Harlem's Apollo Theater (where they appeared with Dinah Washington); and the tour of the Soviet Union with Benny Goodman, a journey that might have been a high point of Crow's travels abroad but was marred by Goodman's legendary mistreatment of his band.
Moving beyond jazz clubs to the Broadway concert pit and a variety of studio gigs in the '60s, Crow encounters actors such as Yul Brynner and pop-rock acts like Simon and Garfunkel. From the great to the near-great, from Billie Holiday to Judy Holliday, Bill Crow's wealth of personal anecdotes takes the reader from Birdland, to the Half Note, to the Playboy Club, to the footlights of Broadway. This revealing book is a marvelous portrait of the jazz world, told by someone who's been there.
