"Dream Keeper"

"The dream keeper and other poems", by Langston Hughes.

As I Grew Older

It was a long time ago.
I have almost forgotten my dream.
But it was there then,
In front of me,
Bright like a sun-
-My dream.

And then the wall rose,
Rose slowly,
Slowly,
Dimming,
Hiding,
The light of my dream
Rose until it touched the sky-
-The wall.

Shadow.
I am black.

I lie down in the shadow.
No longer the light of my dream before me,
Above me.
Only the thick wall.
Only the shadow.

My hands!
My dark hands!
Break through the wall!
Find my dream!
Help me to shatter this darkness,
To smash this night,
To break this shadow
Into a thousand lights of sun,
Into a thousand whirling dreams
Of sun!

Bassist Sam Jones, always best known for being a sideman (most notably with Cannonball Adderley's Quintet), recorded three superior Riverside albums as a leader during 1960-62 that have all been reissued on CD in the OJC series. This particular one, the third, features Jones on bass and cello in several settings. Four selections (including Horace Silver's "Strollin'" and "Unit Seven") are with an all star nonet/tentet while four others showcase Jones's cello in quintets with either Les Spann or Frank Strozier on flute and Israel Crosby or Ron Carter on bass.

Rec. Chicago ILL, December 1957

Label: Audio Fidelity AFLP 5875

If you are familiar with the name Pat Moran, you know your Chicago mainstream jazz from the late '50s. A wonderful stylist molded in the musical post-bop-to-cool visage of a Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, or Bill Evans, Ms. Moran played spirited standard fare, and on this CD interpretations of Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way," Oscar Pettiford's "Collard Greens and Black-Eyed Peas," and the simple "Blues," all of which advance well beyond mere cocktail lounge background music. This reissue, originally from the Audio Fidelity label releases This Is Pat Moran and Beverly Kelly Sings, features Moran's bright piano on American popular songs for four of the eight tracks with her trio, including the vaunted bassist Scott LaFaro. Two years after these sessions, LaFaro would join the trio of Bill Evans, and was killed in a car accident two years after that in the summer of 1961. Also included in the instrumental fare is an obscure Frank Rosolino composition, "Onilosor," which perfectly showcases LaFaro's tight, innovative bass wizardry. Bev Kelly, a skilled singer in the Anita O'Day tradition, has at it for another ten songs and sounds great, and Moran ends the affair with two solo piano performances. A precious bit of history from that great and enduring year in jazz, 1957, this extra-special document should make all listeners wish they had heard more of Moran and Kelly, not to mention the immortal Scott LaFaro, who reflected on this date as one of his most memorable and enjoyable.

well, first things first: here's a guest post so stellar that it was sent to me by two different readers, froz1 and tavanadaniel. i wanna thank you guys both, this is great music, from the magical strata-east.

this was recorded on two dates in 1975 and 1979, and marks one of the last records issued by Strata-East in its golden age. last, but not least. with the label's commitment to creative challenges, here's a band where a bunch of bass players step out in front for some deep deep sounds, plucking and bowing and slapping their way to a really unusual but really awesome record. you'll be reminded that for all its funk credentials, the bass is just big brother to the cello. it's the brainchild of bill lee, who seems to have understood harmony in a really profound way. as for standout tracks there's a terrific version of "john coltrane" also found back on clifford jordan's "glass bead games."

don't forget to browse through the strata-east fan club;
there's a few links there you won't find anywhere else and a whole lot of great music.
